March check-in on 2011 intentions

Wow, I am really slacking on my journaling, aren't I? I have been busy, so that's a good thing, and I'm giving my life a lot of thought, which is probably a good thing, too, but I really ought to be here more if only to document the craziness of my training for the Tour de Cure bike event. I need to make more of an effort. In the meantime, though, let me at least write an update to my 2011 intentions.

  1. Sign up for at least one active event per month (fostering a stronger connection to my body).
  2. Properly plant and properly care for at least two vegetable plants in my community garden plot (strengthening my connection to the Earth).
  3. Find time to meditate and/or do yoga for at least 15 minutes once a week (connecting with my body and spirit).
For #1, I just completed my March 5K, Finish Chelsea's Run. It was a little crazy in that I showed up 30 minutes late, had to park a mile away, was told I couldn't participate then allowed to walk the route backwards only if I could make it to the end of the freeway closure in 30 minutes (I did), and had to figure out the (backward) route by asking random event participants which way they'd run when they'd come through (forward) earlier. Crazy. But I finished. I also continue to train for the 30 mile Tour de Cure event. This weekend included not only the aforementioned 5K but also a 13 mile bike ride. Sore backside? Sure, but I keep on rolling.

For #2, I did buy two plants (broccoli and cabbage) but I never planted them. They seem to be doing OK in their little, plastic pots out on the front porch, though, so I guess there's that. I really do need to get them in a much bigger pot and throw fertilizer at them as well. Next weekend.

For #3, I was doing really well until this past week when I missed my 7:00 am spin and yoga class. I missed it because of changes in my weekday morning schedule that didn't get me out of the house in time and I'm not sure if I can adapt to fit it back in or not. I am looking forward to getting back into my Monday night Gentle Yoga class at the start of the next 8-week session (not this Monday but the next) and I know I can use that time to connect and reintegrate.

In short, some things are going well and others are not. I really do feel that I'm making a good go at living an active lifestyle although there's definitely lots of room to improve. While I continue to be frustrated by my emotional eating, at least I'm adding more vegetables to my diet and that can't be a bad thing.

I don't know what else to say so I'll close. Add your thoughts to the Comments or an email.

Wow, 5k is impressive and you should be congratulated! I myself can't engage in running because my knees always suffer pain from the landing impact so I have to do other forms of cardio like swimming laps or jogging on my rebounder. I would love to be able to do runs like the ones you do but that's just not in the picture for me. Have you everc tried rebounding btw? I set a goal of loosing 25 pounds by the time summer arrives and so far my swimming/rebounding/weights combo has been working really well for me. Anyway, it was nice finding your blog and I wish you all the best with you 2011 goals!

Wow, Denise, your activity level is very impressive! Just a thought - you might find it a little easier to have smaller portions if you up the lean protein in your diet. Even the "good" stuff --- veggies & fruits --- can give you less of an endurance kind of energy than high protein, and lead to that "let down" which in turn leads to extra eating of not-so-great foods.

I often fuel up with a half cup of FF cottage cheese before a long walk or bike ride. Unprocessed white-meat chicken is good, too. Sometimes I'll even have an egg.

And I am sure that I get lean protein in every meal, plus lots of salad, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, zucchini, etc. for my veggies. I don't eat much fruit other than a handful of blueberries ... occasionally strawberries or apple.

Best wishes on all your goals!

Leslie
