Tuesday morning. For anyone curious as to why I didn't post yesterday, that would be because I am (still) sick. I thought that I felt horrible on Friday but it was just a little teaser for the misery that was to come. I came in to work for a couple of hours yesterday and I think that's about as long as I'll make it today, too. My head is full, my chest hurts from coughing, and I think I'm running a slight fever (I'm warm and have flushed cheeks). I came in to clear my email, listen and respond to voicemail, and show my face so that my team doesn't think I'm trying to get out of the mad fun of this time of year here at work.
This truly is the most wonderful time to be here at VLSCI, especially in our division. Lots of sick people coming in to work (yes, you can put me on that list, too, but I'm staying in my office and not allowing anyone in!) and spreading germs, lots of bake sales, craft sales, etc which no one has time to go to but everyone does anyway, and, best of all, lots of products releasing.
The sad thing is that this is the only "real" job I've ever had, because it's the first thing I did out of college, so I don't know any other way to celebrate the holidays. For the past 11 years, Thanksgiving has been a blessed day off from 60 hour work weeks and Christmas Day has been the culmination of days of frantic online shopping (and shipping). By New Year's, we used to be pretty much done, but then we picked up support for a different product line and things don't settle down until the last week in January.
I have to say, though, in the interest of fairness, that this year has been a very good one for our team. We've been on top of everything since the very beginning, with minimal OT, which has made everyone much happier folks. Even with the avalanche of last minute change requests, we're still so much better off than we usually are this time of year that I'm not going to complain.
